How I cured my dry lips naturally

How many of you think that all lip balms are made equal when you’re trying to heal dry lips, and that if they’re not working you’re just not using enough? Well, I did.

I used to have this weird dry bit of skin clinging onto the centre of my top lip for as long as I can remember.

Four or five times a day I would slather on the ol’ Vaseline, only to feel the need for more just a few hours later.

So of course, when I ditched shampoo and went all-natural with everything else, I figured okay, Vaseline isn’t curing my dry lips and actually it’s an unsustainable byproduct of the oil industry and is kinda gross, so let’s try summat else.

And of COURSE that dry bit of dry skin pissed off within like a week or two of using natural lip balms and now I have super soft lips that need less balm, less often.

Graeme actually ditched lip balms altogether years before he met me when he heard that using it is what makes you need it in the first place, and within a few days of painfully dry lips his suddenly balanced out and he’s had no problems since.

But me, I’m not quite ready to part with my nommy lip gunks just yet, and over the last year I’ve tried a whole bunch and found a few amazing ones that I’m happy to recommend (and others who shall remain nameless…).

Axiology (US-based, lipsticks available internationally)

Makers of natural, organic, vegan AND cruelty-free lipstick, Axiology’s lip balm has been my favourite so far.

I got mine free with an Axiology lipstick purchase from Reina Organics a while ago, but I can’t seem to track it down to buy from anywhere (if you know where I can buy ALL the things please let me know).

It’s flavoured with peppermint and orange and it glides on like butter.

I’m going to be totally devastated when I run out - I will definitely need to check in with Rayna and see if she still has stock at some point.

Clean Living Collection (US-based, ships internationally)

Another freebie with purchase, the gorgeous Ariel has popped one of her organic, non-GMO, non-toxic, cruelty-free Un-Chap Sticks in sweet wild orange into my last couple of orders.

I think I must have had an unrealised love for orange because this is another lip balm that I keep close by on my dressing table at home for those moments I want a little treat.

I’ve also spoken about Ariel’s deodorant in the past which I still love for hot summer days, as well as her awesome “cold” cleansing cream and natural tooth powders which I use instead of conventional toothpaste.

What I love about Ariel is that she’s so passionate about clean living and is always cooking up new products and sharing her experiments on Instagram, I honestly can’t recommend her enough to you.

Because I like to share the love, I popped one of Ariel’s balms into a little green beauty care package for a friend recently along with some of my other favourite products and samples, ain’t I the cutest:

Beefayre (UK-based, ships internationally)

Between Christmas and New Year 2015 I went to North Norfolk for a few days, one of my favourite places for independent retailers and boutique shopping.

In some totally random little tourist shop whose name I can’t remember I stumbled across these organic lip balms by Beefayre so I grabbed one in - guess what - a sweet orange and clementine flavour.

Organic and made with PETA-approved cruelty-free beeswax, it’s another one I really like using, even if the lid is a fiddly little bugger sometimes.

You can order directly from Beefayre’s website, which I may well do in the future once this tin runs out.

While I’m chatting about Beefayre I’d also like to introduce you to a lovely stockist of their all-natural candles - one of the UK’s better-known green beauty bloggers Amber’s Beauty Talk has launched her own retail site over at Nectar and Bumble.

Amber’s gorgeous shop is dedicated to bee-based products with 10% of her profits going to charities who are working to save the bees, so have a butchers! (Amber’s UK-based and ships to Europe, USA and Canada)

Fushi (UK-based, ships internationally)

I got my Fushi organic hydrating lip balm on sale from Naturisimo ages ago and my little tub is still going strong.

I even went crazy and strayed from the orange flavour.

This one’s minty and made with avocado oil and peppermint and geranium essential oil, and it gives your lips a very slight tingly feeling when you put it on.

It’s lovely for dry lips and seems to be available from a lot of different places, definitely one worth trying especially if you like to feel minty and fresh.

Sadly, my pot has completely faded so a photo would be a bit of a waste and I can’t be bothered to steal someone else’s photo right now - a quick Google will show you just how pretty the packaging is.

So yeah, my dry lips haven’t given me grief since I switched from conventional chap sticks to these lovely all-natural goodies.

Isn’t nature just the freaking best?

Keep your eyes peeled for a follow-up to this with my favourite non-drying, non-crap all-natural lipsticks 😉
