To earn some extra cash on the side, the Blue Jeans White Tee Blog was launched in 2013 with the express purpose of selling surfboards on Craigslist. The true story began when it became clear that there was a genuine desire to be able to buy surfboards online.
Blue Jeans White Tee Blog used to run its board sales out of a one-bedroom in New York City. There were surfboards all over the place if you’d walked in. Boards covered every surface of the home, including the bedroom, loft, living room, kitchen, and bathroom. At its peak, we crammed as many as 97 surfboards into that little room. The decision to relocate the hobby-turned-business was made after some serious debate about selling the kitchen table to make more room.
When board sales are all that matter, you adopt a “stack ’em deep and sell ’em cheap” mindset. However, this naivete has several unforeseen repercussions. As a result, we found ourselves in the unenviable position of having more enemies than friends in the surf industry. There is a lot of background to surf culture that we didn’t know about when we first got started.
Like many things, comprehension comes with experience. To fast forward to the present day, it is clear that Blue Jeans White Tee Blog has developed greatly. Our company used to produce generic boards with little attention paid to shape, design, or construction quality, but now we work with Bill Minard, a local San Diego legend and shaper of 51 years, to continually improve our designs. When you put one of our surfboards under your feet, you’ll immediately feel at home because it was shaped by a master.
In contrast to popular belief, we currently construct all of our custom boards in San Diego while producing our epoxy boards in China. All of our boards are manufactured with the same care and precision. You may or may not find this to be a major problem, but many surfers do. Although the production process has made it practically hard to create epoxy boards in the United States, many of our boards are still built in San Diego, California.
When we first started selling boards, we did it out of an apartment. Now, we have a proper warehouse and showroom. Stop over and check out the surfboards, lounge on the couch, and watch some surf films playing on the wall.
We started as a group of goofballs, but now we’ve grown into a solid crew of surfers who contribute to all areas of the business. At one point or another, we were all newcomers. The importance of this is never lost on us as we assist you. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned pro, you can rest assured that you’ll be treated with dignity here.
We’re also really pleased with some of the firsts we’ve introduced to the market. We pioneered the “Ride-It Guarantee” to give customers peace of mind that they were purchasing the best possible board. We also provide the unusual option of making installment payments toward your board. Unlike traditional layaway plans, this one really allows you to start using your board before you’ve finished making payments.
We want you to be genuine, so please don’t try to imitate anyone else. We provide a welcoming environment for newcomers to the surf scene, where they can feel comfortable asking any question they like and receiving honest feedback without fear of being labeled as an imposter. We’re here to support you no matter where you’re at on your surfing journey—whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned pro.
Exactly how much do we know? Not even remotely. Our organization is just beginning to grasp the full scope of its industry and culture, including its forebears’ roles and contributions and the best ways to carry on their work.
We’d like to think that we can go above and beyond. We want to create boards that get you excited for your next session, a company that you’re proud to associate yourself with, and a community that you long to join. We acknowledge that we will always have room to improve, and we commit to doing just that.
We appreciate you coming along for the ride. You are now a member of the Team.
